This maybe a dumb question, but I'm starting out w/ this workout thing & don't know if I want to invest in home equipment or join a gym yet, so I bought a jump rope.
Do you think this principle would be applicable with jumping rope?
Unless you're doing double unders, normal skipping won't get your heart rate high enough for tabata

only if you are going HARD by: robert
I agree with Paul... it CAN be done but in order to get the most out of it you are practically going to have to be doing double jumps, or if you are doing singles probably alternating legs when you jump because you will need to be working in the range of about 2 1/2 - 3 jumps per SECOND. That will also take some coordination too. I tried it myself and it kicked my @$$ but again you gotta swing the rope like heck say about 60-80 times just in the 20 second period.

Ditch the rope by: Paul
Probably just plain old-fashioned tuck jumps would work though. They're killers. May have to give that a try...

HIIT w/jump rope by: Anonymous
it's hard to tabata with rope as the time is too short (basically i agree the these other guys) but you can HIIT - 50 / 10 split for 10mins is a killer!!!

JUMP ROPE TABATA STYLE is great by: darla
I coach a competitive jump rope team for athletes ages 9-20somethings. We use a tabata sprint workout with our speed ropes (a wire cable with ball bearing handles). In one exercise the jumpers are alternating feet. Our better athletes get up to 180-190 reps in 30 seconds, so they are FAST. It does take coordination, so I recommend getting the rhythm and form down first, then do it Tabata style. The other workout we do with ropes is double unders...and for our 15 year olds and up, triple unders. We also use our speed ropes for this. Double under means the rope does 2 passes under the body before the feet hit the ground. A triple under means the rope does 3 passes under the body before the feet hit the ground. These are done extremely fast and really take it of you. You can buy speed ropes from www.buyjumpropes.net. They are adjustable. For speed, stand on the ropes in the middle and handles should reach your hips on either side. You may want to start with them slightly longer until you get the hang of it, then shorten them to hip level.
I am 49 years old and also compete in jump rope speed events. The tabata jump rope workout kicks my butt every time.
