Muscle soreness what is normal

by Jody
(Yorkshire, England )

I'm a 33 year old male and have been running for 15 years. Usually 5 miles 2 - 3 times per week. I'm lean everywhere, 80kgs and 5ft 9 ", apart from a little belly fat that I would like to strip so I started the lose belly fat routine.

When I started my 3rd session of week one the stiffness / soreness in my right hamstring and left glute prevented me from sprinting properly. I tried but my body wouldn't do it and was quite painful.I finished the session but reduced the rest down to 45 seconds. Legs still felt like lead whenI'd finished.

The thing is I didn't really expect this as I am already quite fit and would like to know if what I'm feeling is normal or not and how long I should leave it before I try another session.

I'm very worried that I may have a tear but don't know how to tell.

I would like to add that I have felt fantastic on the off days and have had more energy and strength during my weight routines.

Any feedback anyone
by: Jody

Moved onto week 2 now, with a little delay, and although I'm fine with the 60 second rest period and sprinting at 90% effort I'm still quite stiff and a little sore in places.

Is anyone having a similar experience ?

I have noticed some fat loss already though and feel fantastic after I've finished my sprints.

When I'm on my warm up my normal running pace seems faster too. I hope that I have got the metal to see this through.

Body Stiffness
by: Greg

Its fairly normal to be a bit stiff and sore when doing these workouts but you need to make a judgment call.

You want to be helping your body to improve, not to hurt it.

So if you feel like you have done some damage, stop doing intervals, take it easy and let your body repair itself.

If on the other hand you feel that its just a bit stiff from exercise, then warm up properly and go for it.

Just remember that the lose belly fat workout is designed for you to progress at your own level, a level that is comfortable for you. Its meant to ache, burn and be difficult but its not meant to really hurt.

In fact it even advises you to take your sprints easy in the beginning.

Push yourself within your own limits.

Well done for keeping up with it.

Soreness continued
by: Jody

I'm moving onto to week three this morning and the soreness / stiffness does ease and you know what to expect. It starts again, not quite as bad though, when you reduce the rest time.

I've found it a great help to stretch my calves and hamstrings a couple of times a day everyday just for thirty seconds at a time.

I'm having to psyhc myself up for these sprints now even the day before because it's just brutal if you do it properly. I'm fit, rsted pulse less than 50 bpm, but when I get to the last two sprints I feel like I'm drowning. The air is going in but it doesn't do anything. Also feels like the sprints have turned to slow mo no matter how hard you push.

Good news is I'm losing some fat. Progress is slow but I haven't got much to lose and so hope to expose something like a six pack by week eight.
