Marathon Runner Wants To Incorporate Tabata into Workouts...

So I've just completed four marathons over the spring, and my Achilles tendon is definitely saying take a break. I hate the elliptical machine and treadmill. My workouts (60-90 minutes strength, 60-90 minutes cardio) are long, difficult, but getting boring. I'll alternate upper and lower body so I can work out every day; unfortunately I feel like I've run this routine into the ground because I've been doing it for so long (it's no longer fun and I'm seeing no results).
I love the principles behind Tabata training and want to know if anyone has found a way to mix this style of training into their regular routine (I read the article and know you can't do actual Tabata training daily...anyone do a 'Tabata lite' program?). I am training soon for my autumn marathons and would like to start fresh with something effective.
