To be completely honest, I don't really know, it would be best to chat to your doctor and your physio.
I doubt they would want you to get into tabata without some sort of rehabilitation to get your core strong again.
What specifically are your goals with tabata?

OK with bulging disks by: Anonymous
I have L4L5 bulging disks ( which is less severe than herniated disks ) and so far I've not had any problems with the interval work. I use a spin cycle for intervals. In fact, I seemed to have more problems with my back working out on the treadmill. I also alternate between spin cycling and rowing machine workouts, without any detrimental effects. To me it seems that as I became fitter and stronger, my back problem is being alleviated as well.
I would take advice from a good physio or sports doctor before starting any exercise regime, and then if the OK is given, proceed very very slowly.

Exercising with Herniated disk by: Anonymous
I have a Herniated Disk as well as two bulging discs (i've been told it is an Annulus tear in the disk as well as two disks potruding on either side), as well as quite extensive degeneration in L5/S1.
I've found a lot of physios/dr's cannot prescribe exact exercise, its more the trial and error phase with slow moderate exercise and building from there. I have found myself that resistance bands are very helpful and even with doing higher intensity, e.g. with a medium resistsance band (or you could start on a lighter one - i think they are yellow-) doing compound exercises e.g. using more than one muscle group/more than one joint is very rewarding such as rows, chest press, band pulldows etc, basically similar to if you were using weights but replacing this with the resistance band which puts less stress on your joints. It may not work for you but you could try it lightly although everyone is different, basically if it hurts dont do it. I found resistance band high intensity is very helpful for me as long as i am aware of how far i am pushing myself. E.g. now i can do 20 seconds of each exercise with a 10 second rest quite easily and i feel my strength has improved.
Hope that helps.
Also I found swimming was really effective, I had to start slow but after a few months now i can really push myself and do swimming interval training which is really toning my body due to using water as resistance which is also very kind on the joints and bones.

TrampetteNEW by: Anna
I have a herniated disk and can't run because of the hard surface, so i used a trampette/mini trampoline, within a few weeks i was much fitter and definitely slimmer as i lost 1 1/2 stones and no further aggravation to my back.
