Changing sprinting to cycling fast?

by Hanafi
(Malaysia)

Can we change sprint to cycling fast? This is due my problem at my knee. My knee is still under rehabilitation and I am advised not to put much pressure toward my knee. So can we change it to cycling fast? 20sec cycling fast and 10sec rest and continue for 8times.

Using Tabata for cycling
by: Greg

You can definitely do cycling with Tabata but first things first, if you are undergoing some sort of rehabilitation on your knee, you probably don't want to be doing something as intense as tabata, give it a little time to heal and get strong, then start tabata.

As far as using a bike for tabata I prefer using a spinning bike as it has a lot of control over the resistance and its pretty stable when you are pushing hard.

Speed or Resistance

Should the 20seconds be more resistance and less speed, or more speed and less resistance?

Resistance and speed
by: Greg

It really should be both, a lot of people don't put much resistance on when they are doing hiit and as a result, its pretty easy just to spin on a bike at a very high pace.

you need to crank up the resistance so its hard work to pedal but you can still pedal. Once its there then you need to pedal as fast as you can.

Do you recommend doing this before or after a work out or a sand alone type of workout. I am 40 y/o,
diabetic & overweight by 30lbs am 5'8 195lbs. I am trying to get back into an exercise routine for my health reasons. Thanks

After a workout
by: Greg

It would be the last thing i would do in a workout, but its tough enough to do by itself.

If you are just starting out this is probably not the workout to begin with, it may just be a little tough for a person who needs to get into their training. I know you are probably very keen to rush into getting fit again but the number one rule at this stage is to be kind to your body, interval training will be tough enough on it.

If i was in your position I would probably have a look at the lose belly workout. It will be just as effective as this for you and it lets you get into the groove of interval training slowly.
