Can I do this on a stationary bicycle?

I've been having knee problems all my life. I can use the treadmill once or twice for about 10 mins and nothing happens. As soon as I hit the street to run outside my knees hurt from the sides. I did go to a sports medicine doctor about 10 years ago and he told me that I need to use a bike because my knees will never handle running on a hard surface. Even with knee surgery is it not 100% sure I will ever run on a hard surface and not have knee problems. So I never had surgery done. ( my treadmill has shocks on the sides , really good for those who cant run on hard surfaces but feel the need to run). Can I do this interval training on a bike ?? I like the outdoors and recently I'm considering using a bike because running looking at the wall or the TV is boring. I really miss doing exercise outside I'm not really in to doing exercise inside four walls.

Answer:
You can definitely do this on a stationery bike, its probably one of the best pieces of equipment for interval training. I like to use a spinning bike because you get a lot of control over the resistance and its very solid and stands up well to an interval workout.

Weight Training
by: Tony

I agree that HIIT is the best way to burn fat and in-turn lose weight. However, if you are also trying to put on muscle mass this wont work will it? I love the idea of using HIIT with strengh training but will I also be able to gain muscle mass? On the nutrition side, dont you have to eat more than you burn to gain muscle? You say use large muscle groups, does that mean legs, chest, and back? So, squats or lunges, chest/bench press, and pull-ups or rows? How can i build big arms when im not isolating on my bies and tries? Thanks.
