The only way your body can burn fat is if you use it as energy in your muscles……….and that’s it...

Disappointed? I hope not...

Maybe you were hoping for something exotic? Something like kataboxathonaerobics?

Sorry to disappoint but it doesn’t matter what diet you are on, what special super fat loss pills you are trying to take whatever new super metabolic exercise routine you are doing to lose weight, the only place your body get rid of fat is through your muscle, you can’t sweat it out, it doesn’t come out when you go to the toilet, you need to burn it up in your muscle.

“But I’ve been told in order to lose weight I have to eat less than calories that I need to use? Surely that’s the weight loss secret?”

Sure, but it’s a half truth; if you eat a lot less than you need your muscles will burn fat. The problem comes in where your body also burns muscle in this state. As I said before, the only way to lose fat is burning it up in muscle and when you waste muscle, your need for energy (fat) decreases. So you need to decrease the amount you eat again, until you can’t anymore. And the bad news is that at a point you will be eating more than you need and in low calorie diets you get to store all of this as new fat. This may be the new secret to gain fat but it not the weight loss secret you are looking for.


Ok, to start understanding how this works imagine your body is a car and your muscles are the engine, fuel would be the food, so in other words the fuel tank is your fat stores, and this get filled up every day. So weight loss secret 2 how would you empty this fuel tank?

Quite easy really, have the biggest engine possible and race that engine as hard as you could. There’s one more thing that you wouldn’t really think of, namely get as much fuel, as fast possible to the engine for as long as possible. If you had a car like that you would probably have one of the largest gas bills ever, and probably have Greenpeace picketing outside your front gate! On the other hand if your body worked like this you would love it…

So knowing that your muscles are the only weight loss secret, how does this change your approach to losing weight? Well quite simply

  • you need to focus completely on finding a way to get the most amounts of fat stores to your muscles as possible,
  • while at the same time making sure that your muscle have the biggest demand for fat as a source of energy.

Your first guess may be that doing lots of aerobic exercise may be the weight loss secrets key, but that’s not the case. To understand why aerobics is not the best option, click here.

So lets relate the engine metaphor back to your body, there are a few differences when you compare it with a car.

  • Your body is in a constant state of building fat stores or breaking them down. You need to a bit of negotiating with your body to do the former for as much of the day as possible
  • Your muscles have their own energy reserves which they hold onto very tightly. While holding onto this energy (called glycogen) it uses energy from your blood stream. You need to get your muscles to give their internal energy stores up as it take hours for your body to replace these.
  • Every day your muscles use up a certain amount of energy, you need to increase this need to as much as possible; this will help you burn fat while you sleep.
  • Your muscles receive energy through a transport system that takes energy from your blood stream to your muscle. You need to turn this trickle of energy into a rushing river in flood.

If you are still in any doubt whether this is pretty much the only way to lose your body fat then it’s probably best to stop reading now. If not you may have noticed that instead of trying to lose bits of weight we are actually trying to change your body into a fat burning machine, a machine that burns fat automatically.

The good news is that this system is fairly straight forward to achieve, this weight loss secrets not complicated…..

The bad news is that it’s no cake walk, its hard work. You probably have guessed how this is going to work,

  • exercise,
  • resistance training and;
  • nutrition.

  • You need to convince your body to be breaking down fat rather than storing. Research has found that time and amount of time that your body stays in a fat burning state is directly related to the intensity of the exercise.   • You need to get your body to use up it glycogen stores. When you do interval training your body can’t get sufficient energy to your muscles from the blood stream. So your muscles are forced to use it up it energy stores doing this, this is something that never happens in aerobic activity and is the main difference in interval training.   • You need to increase the amount of energy your muscles need in a day. Now obviously building bigger muscles does this, however in interval training there is an adaptation that takes place. Your muscles need to adapt in case this stressfull exercise happen again, so it increases the amount of energy it can store in the muscle. The greater this amount is, the energy(fat) is required to replace this energy when its used up. So the more interval training you do, the better your body gets at burning fat.
  • You need to increase the ability of your body to get energy to your muscles as fast as possible. Interval training adapts this system to increase the speed and volume of the flow of energy. The more energy that is flowing to your muscles the less is going to be stored as fat.
